The 11-foot volunteer sunflower continues to amaze us, and hosts SO many bees, flower flies, and butterflies, the rest of the neighborhood must feel left out.
Eurybia macrophylla, big-leaf aster. Remember the good old days when asters were just Asters?
Well, this is a terrible picture, but it's my prairie dock, Silphium terebinthinaceum, with flowering stalks reaching high above my head.
Foley and Lucy, my favorite two flowers of all!

The flowers are great, but I just love your dogs. Lost my Akita last year and was looking into rescuing a greyhound. Are they really couch potatoes? Your's look so sweet. So does the other guy, btw, don't want to leave him out.
I love the prairie dock, one of my fave natives. I don't know why I don't have one. The whole Aster thing is confusing, but that's another story. Have I asked you before about saving seeds from your giant purple hyssop? Cause I'd really appreciate some. :)
P.S> I saw your comment on fewer Japanese beetles this year at Linda's. It's because August of last year was dry and that's when they lay eggs. Fewer eggs survive in dry soils.
@Monica - I'd be happy to try to save seeds from the hyssop! I never cut down the old blooms anyway. I'll keep an eye on it and see what it does. I hope it's a selfer b/c it's the only one I have.
If a dry August means fewer J. beetles, I hate to see what's going to happen next year :[
I adore yellow flowers! Your rudbeckias are so pretty. And loving those pale yellow ones by the garage.
Sunflowers are cool, aren't volunteers fun? I always tend to let things grow and see what comes up.

Yellow seems to be the appropriate color for August, Diane. That is one huge sunflower! And thanks for showing the prairie dock--I don't think I've ever seen one in bloom before. But I agree, Foley and Lucy are as beautiful as any flowery blooms in the garden.

I've experienced the "realization of yellow" often in the past 38 years... it seems like I work at adjusting the colors as it were, and before long I'm right back there! But as an earlier comment said... "so what's wrong with yellow"? I enjoyed seeing your blog... Larry
Nothing wrong with yellow flowers, although are you as fascinated as I am with the number of different shades of yellow there are? I like the pale or 'clear' yellows more than I do the brown-eyed-Susan shades, but they're all great in my books.
That sunflower is pretty impressive. I'm jealous. Make sure to save seeds and see if the next ones are that large and prolific bloomers.
