February: Snow!

I wanted to post about all the repotting of houseplants I did over the weekend, or the googol of cuttings I took for no good reason, but that undertaking is not yet finished because weekends are just too darned short.

Instead, you get pictures of snow! It snowed from Monday night until sometime early Wednesday morning, and the storm was capped off by an earthquake centered between Chicago and Rockford at 4 am (which we did not feel, though others in Chicago did).

This was the sight that greeted me this morning:

The block I live on is beautiful, whether dressed in its winter or summer finery

Your yard is beautiful and I love that last photo of your street.

The earthquake woke me up this morning. I don't understand earthquakes or how they measure them but I heard ours was 1600 times weaker than the one in Haiti.

In the last hour or so the experts have changed their minds on the strength and the site of this quake.

I probably would have felt the earthquake, had I been awake, but it wasn't enough to wake me up. While the snow is pretty, your last photo reminds me of the years I lived in Chicago & trying to navigate icy sidewalks that no one shoveled. In my town, there's an ordinance requiring homeowners to shovel their parkway sidewalks.

Seems like we're getting your snow here in CT - 8" already! My yard already looks like yours... It's funny living here because we get so little snow. I lived in NW Chicago (Rolling Meadows) before moving here so I'm used to a little more snow - not that I'm complaining about the lack of ice, sleet, driving winds, and piles of snow everywhere!!

such pretty photos Diane - the morning light is perfect. It's a weird feeling knowing we slept through an earthquake. We slept through the last one a couple of years ago, though several neighbors were wakened by the noise and shaking.

I slept through the earthquake, but apparently its epicenter was pretty close to me. I'm a deep sleeper, I guess! Your pictures are lovely, but I must admit I'm tired of snow now. At least this past storm wasn't as bad as I thought it might be!

Slept through the earthquake but I'm loving all this snow. I almost don't want it to melt and reveal all the trash and mess I didn't get around to cleaning in the spring. Your dog looks like it had fun outside.

Marnie - Thanks! Now they're saying Haiti was 32,000 times stronger. Hardly makes ours worth mentioning!

MMD - There is a sidewalk ordinance here but no enforcement except maybe in commercial areas. Our neighbors are very good about it but you should see the mess on Irving Park over by the Blue Line, on stretches near vacant storefronts or places where there are no buildings. Good boots are a necessity!

GardenJunkie - We've had an unusually large amount of snow this year and last; the sleety, blowing storms are memorable but luckily rare. I heard something about Washington DC not plowing anymore because they have nowhere to put the snow?! Yikes!

garden girl - Thanks! I've slept through three earthquakes and I am starting to wonder what's wrong with me!

TMCH - Thanks for coming by and doing some tech support! No, that's not sarcasm; TMCH is my sweetie :)

rambleonrose - I thought this storm was pretty well-behaved, too - I never did hear that nasty wind they were predicting. The sad thing is that over the weekend I finally saw some daffodils peeking up, and now they're under a foot of snow, poor little things.

MBT - Isn't it pretty? I don't have to look at my muddy, torn-up yard until it melts (of course, compounding the mud!).

Yes, your neighborhood is indeed beautiful all dressed in white! And you've probably had even more of the white stuff since this was posted:) This strange winter is making me wonder what the summer will be like.
